So what do you do when your assistant gets pregnant? You get asked to do the Maternity Portraits. I have done a lot of baby photography and a large number of toddler portraits. I have never done any maternity photography, how hard can that be?

Well I suppose the fact that we have worked together meant that we knew what to do. Shelly researched the images she liked, as many clients do. My job to realize the images. Between 7 and 8 months is the perfect time. The bump is big enough and the skin is beautiful.

This is a special time and there can be no re-shoots. You need somebody that can get it right first time. A typical session will last a couple of hours. This allows changes of outfit. Those important comfort breaks, and all at a leisurely pace. Shelly has done many of these herself. Shelly’s maternity photography – now she better understands being on the other side of the camera.
